Biography

Southwest Texas State Normal School was established in 1903. The name was changed in 1918 to Southwest Texas State Normal College, in 1923 to Southwest Texas State Teachers College, in 1959 to Southwest Texas State College, in 1969 to Southwest Texas State University, and in 2003 to Texas State University-San Marcos. San Marcos qualifier was dropped in 2013.

Abstract The C. E. Evans Papers were a gift to Southwest Texas State University Archives in 1987 from his daughter, Bernice (Mrs. Erwin L.) Soyars, Jr., and others. Texas State University was established by the 26th Legislature in 1899 as the Southwest Texas State Normal School; 313 pupils were enrolled in 1903-04, the first year classes were held.

Abstract

Oscar Strahan served as the first professional coach and first Athletic Director for Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University) from 1919 to 1961. Largely photographs, the collection contains noteworthy images of early Southwest Texas State Normal College sports teams, World War I training camp Camp Logan, and mass produced battlefield views from France. Also includes Strahan’s family history materials.

Collection contains handwritten and printed documents associated with the members and activities of the German Club at Southwest Texas State Normal School from 1912 to 1918. Until its disappearance in 1919 it was one of the most active associations on campus.

Yates Family memorabilia

Scope and Contents

The collection contains a class ring, pledge cap, and photograph. The class ring belonged to Dora Anna Koch McCall and signifies her graduation in 1918. The cap belonged to Patricia Ruth McCall, from when she pledged the Sallie Beretta Literary Society circa 1949. The photograph is a framed panoramic image of Southwest Texas State Normal College community dated, February 17, 1922.
