Historical note
Female students attending Southwest Texas State College (later Southwest Texas State University, the former name of Texas State University) from the 1950s to the mid-1970s participated in campus-sponsored beauty pageants such as the Miss Southwest Texas and the All-College Beauty/All-Campus Beauty Pageants. Pageants often were held in conjunction with campus events such as homecoming. Pageant winners were awarded prizes such as scholarships or trips, and frequently made public appearances to represent the university at local and regional business and civic events. The winner of the pageant in 1974 was the first to be awarded a trip to Michigan Technological University's Winter Carnival as part of the Snow for Texas program between the two schools.
