Thomas G. Harris administrative records
Scope and Contents
The collection mainly consists of correspondence written to Harris, although the years 1904, 1907, 1908, and 1910 contain letters from Harris. Letters concern school related matters such as admission requirements, student grades, and recommendations. There are also letters from school administrators requesting teachers, letters written by individuals to other faculty members, letters to State Representatives regarding scholarship appointments, and letters to and from other parties. Printed materials are arranged in a second series, with the exception of documents specifically referred to in a letter, in which case the item was left with the corresponding letter. Printed materials include financial documents, applications, programs, brochures, legislative material, and a poem written by students. School regulations and a copy of a blank diploma are also included. The materials span 1903 to 1911.
The collection is arranged into two series, Correspondence and Printed Materials. The series Correspondence is organized chronologically for the Harris letters with a folder for undated items. The remaining letters are grouped according to parties with a folder for faculty letters and one for other parties. Printed Materials are arranged by document type. Due to the absence of a usable original order, the arrangement was artificially imposed during processing.

Historical note
Thomas G. Harris was the first Principal of the Southwest Texas Normal School, which opened in 1903. His title was Principal and not President because the school would not become a college until 1918. During his tenure he taught classes, hired faculty, planned courses, conducted daily chapel services, drew up schedules, and wrote the catalog. President Harris served until 1911, when he left to become president of San Marcos Baptist Academy, a position he held until 1916.
