Biographical note

Dr. Robert Warren Walts (1921–1990), Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus, was born in New Albany, Indiana. He earned his BA, MA, and PhD from Rutgers University. Walts joined Southwest Texas State College faculty in 1959 after teaching at the University of Missouri, the University of Georgia, and Georgia State College. He was promoted to full professor in 1962 and chaired the Department of English and Philosophy from 1965–72. He also served as acting dean of the School of Liberal Arts and the Graduate School. He taught courses on Shakespeare, nineteenth and twentieth-century American novels, and Elizabethan drama. Walts wrote two books and several scholarly articles on William Dean Howells.

Walts was named a Piper Professor in 1982 and retired from the university in 1987. He also served as commissioner for San Marcos's Urban Renewal plan in 1965–1968.
