Series Description

This series is arranged chronologically, and contains mainly invitations, programs and photographs related to awards and honors bestowed upon Graves. A significant portion of this series deals with the Dallas Museum of Art’s “John Graves Day,” celebrated in May 1995, and includes video recordings of the event as well as correspondence, clippings and programs.

These files are arranged by category. Categories include awards, licenses, contracts, programs, invitations, informational booklets, sheet music, post cards, advertisements, a drink recipe, receipts, business cards and addresses. Each category is organized chronologically. These records document activities Pool participated in and attended at Southwest Texas State University, and invitations to political events for Texas Governor John Connally and President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

Series Description From the Series: The Correspondence series contains letters that highlight Graves’ writing career, with letters to and from publishers, agents, fellow writers, fans, event organizers and others. Insights into Graves’ personal life and thoughts are also found in letters between Graves and longtime friends and family members. Graves kept carbon copies and later computer printout copies of many of his letters to others, so the researcher gets both sides of the letter-writing dialogue, in these folders and...

Scope and Contents From the Series:

This addition to the John Graves archives includes various artifacts from Graves’ ranch at Hard Scrabble: fishing lures and spool cases, cow and deer skulls, a cattle brand, photographs and uniforms from Graves’ military service, typewriters, geological surveys and nautical charts, and signed illustrations by Scott Gentling. This accession is the final accrual from Hard Scrabble ranch with the exception of a small amount of material currently in quarantine due to live silverfish.

Subseries Description From the Sub-Series: These files are titled and arranged (alphabetically) according to Reavis’ titles and arrangement. As a result, not all folder titles are entirely indicative of their contents. This sub-series is comprised of general subject files whose contents mostly pertain directly to research for The Ashes of Waco. However, some documents post-date the book, as Reavis continued his research work in the years that followed. The sub-series is dated according to when Reavis...

Series Description From the Series: Notebooks, legal papers, financial papers, photographs, journals, objects and academic records make up the majority of the materials in this series. Graves’ academic career is well documented through grade reports and written recommendations, class notes from undergraduate and graduate school, and his Columbia University Master’s thesis on William Faulkner. Also titled and arranged alphabetically by title, according to how we received them, the research notebooks are additionally very similar to the subject files in that they pertain directly to Reavis’ research for his book. Most files are photocopied books that were bound with plastic comb binders and plain covers, with the titles written on the front. This sub-series is dated according to when Reavis is likely to have accumulated the copies, not by the dates of the original documents.
