This collection contains materials from activities Helen Ray attended at the Southwest Texas State Normal School during 1916-1917. These materials consists of various programs from events such as theatre plays, two issues of the school newspaper The Normal Star, rules on female students, class schedule, and commencement programs.

Biographic note

Helen Ray (1896-1983) was a Southwest Texas State Normal School alum from Longview, Texas. She entered the school in 1916 as part of the Junior class, as her high school experience met the freshman course requirements. She played basketball and was a part of the Pierian Society while at school.

Her parents were Leonard Phouts Ray (1851-1917) and Mary Frances Strong Ray (1850-1936). Helen married Dee Graffenreid McHaney (1893–1960) and had a daughter named after her, Helen McHaney Griffin (1924-2014). Helen’s gravestone also has the last name McGuire listed, so it is assumed she remarried at some point.
