Scope and Contents

The collection consists of planning materials for the University's events and the oral history project commemorating Lyndon Baines Johnson's 100th birthday (LBJ 100). Most of the materials were created by members of the LBJ Centennial Celebration Steering Committee. Items include meeting minutes, agendas, proposals, schedules, emails, lists, forms, notes, research materials, news clippings, magazines, and promotional materials such as brochures, post cards, flyers, stickers and book marks. The collection includes two posters and two banners.

The collection is arranged into two series, Centennial Events Planning, 2002-2009, undated and Oral History Project, 2007-2008, undated. Due to the absence of a usable original order, the arrangement of both series was artificially imposed during processing.

Historical note

The Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Centennial, often referred to by the logo LBJ 100, consisted of events and celebrations at Texas State University coinciding with the 100th birthday of Lyndon Baines Johnson. Johnson's 100th birthday would have been Aug. 27, 2008.

Events scheduled between August 2008 through May 2009 included the “LBJ: The White House Years” exhibit, “Remembering LBJ and His Legacy: Local Recollections—An Oral History Project” exhibit, “To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s” exhibit, LBJ Picnic, the play The Dead President’s Club, and the LBJ Distinguished Endowed Lecture series.

An LBJ Centennial Celebration Steering Committee planned the events with representatives from the Common Experience Team, University Archives, faculty, staff, students, representatives from the San Marcos community and the LBJ Museum of San Marcos, with general oversight by an Honorary Committee that represented the Johnson Family, Johnson White House staff and other Centennial sponsors. The Steering Committee established criteria and guidelines for events, planned a marketing and communications plan, and fostered collaborative initiatives with the university’s external constituents.
