Scope and Contents

Correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, published literary journals, printed material, and book covers (1 box), from 1944 to 1969, related to the life of T. E. Lawrence and Flora Armitage’s biography, The Desert and the Stars. The Special Collections at Texas State has one copy of The Desert and the Stars.

The collection is contains correspondence, writings by Flora Armitage, writings by others, research and field Notes, photographs, memorabilia, and journals. Original order was partially maintained. Correspondence not related to newspaper articles were arranged alphabetically by author by the archivist. The creator’s folder titles were not all used. The collection is small, and has some research material pertaining to The Desert and the Stars, but it contains mostly letters and newspaper clippings about T. E. Lawrence written after Armitage’s book was published.

Biographical note

Flora Armitage was born in Yorkshire, England on October 21, 1911. She immigrated to the United States as a teenager, living in Texas with her family. She moved to New York City in 1945, and began working for the British Information Services. Miss Armitage worked for the British Information Services until her retirement. She died in Webster, Texas on February 6, 1995.

Miss Armitage published three novels: "Sebastian" in 1946, "The Five Deceivers" in 1963, and "The Transformation of Mrs. Arthur" in 1966. She also published a biography of Thomas Edwward (T.E.) Lawrence in 1955, "The Desert and the Stars: a Biography of Lawrence of Arabia." Miss Armitage was also known for her short fiction and essays published in the United Kingdom. She wrote, but did not publish, four other novels, some poetry, and a series of short stories. At the time of her death, she was working on a biography of William Henry Hudson.
