Biography

Hazel Beatrice McCanne was born to Edgar Earl McCanne and Alma Lee Tribble on July 12, 1911 in Waurika, Oklahoma. She received her Bachelors in 1935, and her Masters in 1938 from North Texas State University. She taught at public schools until joining the Education Department at Southwest Texas State Teaching College in 1945. She was also the Director of Nursey School and Kindergarten for SWTSC 1945-1962. McCanne earned her Ph.D in 1951 from Northwestern University. She helped launch Southwest Texas State’s graduate program in early childhood education in 1972. McCanne was involved in multiple societies and professional organizations including Kappa Delta Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Pi Lambda Theta as well as the Association for Childhood Education International who gave McCanne a Recognition of Services Award. Her hobbies included cooking and traveling. McCanne passed away October 2, 1980.
