Biography

Patricia Gayle (Pat) Dismukes Murdock was born 1939 August 30 in Elgin, Texas and grew up in rural Lee County. She moved to San Marcos in 1959 to attend Southwest Texas State University and study journalism and English. She earned her B.S. in 1962 and later a M.Ed. in guidance counseling and English in 1969. During her studies she met Rennie Murdock and married him in 1960.

Murdock served as Director of the University News Service from 1970 through 1993. In that time, she grew the department from herself, a shared secretary, and a half-time sports information director to a staff of seven full-time employees. In 1994, she moved to the University Advancement's development division. She retired in 2007, but worked part time until 2009.

Murdock was very involved with both the Texas State and San Marcos communities. She was an original member of the San Marcos Summerfest Steering Committee; former co-general chairman of the Republic of Texas Chilympiad; LBJ Museum of San Marcos; and served on countless boards and committees including San Marcos' bicentennial and sesquicentennial celebrations. She was the was the first recipient of the Southwest Alumni Association's Key of Excellence Award and was inducted into the San Marcos Women’s Hall of Fame by the City of San Marcos in 1997.

Murdock passed away from cancer on 2016 September 22.
