Historical note

The Council of Academic Deans was established following the reorganization of Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University) in 1965. Effective September 1st of that year, the 19 academic departments that made up the College were organized into five schools, each headed by a Dean. The newly created schools included: the School of Liberal and Fine Arts, the School of Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Applied Arts, and the Graduate School. The Dean of the College was also given the additional title of Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) with the Dean of each of the five schools reporting to the VPAA.

Historically, the Council of Academic Deans has been comprised of the deans of the academic schools and the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Through the VPAA the Council of Academic Deans provides guidance to the President of the University and the President’s Cabinet by advising on policies and procedures affecting academics at the University. The Council offers recommendations on issues including “academic policies, faculty issues, personnel policies and procedures, academic programs and budgets.”

In 2004, the University created the position of Provost, expanding the role of the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs serves as the chief academic officer of the University. Since the creation of the new position, the Council of Academic Deans has continued serving as an advisory board on academics with the Provost and VPAA.

Throughout its history, the Council has also consisted of additional members which have included: the Associate Provost, the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Associate Vice President for Research and Director of Federal Relations, the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management & Marketing, the Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness, the Assistant Vice-President for Academic Services, the Assistant Vice-President for Academic Affairs, the Director of Learning Resources, the Chair of the Faculty Senate, the Chair of the Council of Chairs, and the Presidential Fellow.
