The archives of Texas singer-songwriter James McMurtry include a career-spanning (from 1984 up to and including his 2021 album, The Horses and the Hounds) collection of personal papers and original song lyrics, press clippings, photographs, master audio recordings, and video cassettes. The collection is divided into nine series, with Series I-VIII comprising all of the papers,notepads and photographs (and some small personal items) and Series IX all of the audio and video recordings.

This collection includes a wide expanse of Davis’s articles from 1980-2010, including articles from Davis’s music review column in the Austin-American Statesman. This collection also contains official SXSW and ACL music and program guides, as well as drafts of Davis’s comprehensive ACL book, Austin City Limits: 25 Years of Music.

Scope and Contents From the Series: In 1985, Nelson, alarmed by reports of failing family farms, decided, with the help of other performers, to stage concert benefits. The proceeds were to be channeled to provide assistance to needy agricultural families. Bill Wittliff served as an adviser to the project. CD’s from Saviano’s research material originally given to Dr. Gary Hartman, director of the Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University, in 2006 as part of Dr. Hartman’s research for the book “The History of Texas Music”. The 221 CD’s contain interviews with Texas musicians and are labeled as “copy #2”. All titles are from CD covers, handwritten.
