Clyde Kimsey Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of black and white and color photographs, 35mm color slides, contact sheets, 35mm color negatives and color photographs stored on disc. These photographs document the punk rock, new wave and rock and roll artists performing in the San Antonio/Austin Texas area and are featured in the San Antonio indie music newspaper It’s Only Rock and Roll. Kimsey was a contributing photographer and writer for It’s Only Rock and Roll which was self-published by Ron Young from March 1978 to April 1982. The photographs depict live images of performances and headshots of artists. The proposed arrangement includes one series of photographs, which are arranged alphabetically by the depicted artist. Included are 281 photographs in the collection, many of which were published in It’s Only Rock and Roll.

Biographical Notes
Clyde Kimsey is a San Antonio photographer whose work was featured prominently in It’s Only Rock and Roll from the late 1970’s to the early 1980’s. It’s Only Rock ’N’ Roll was an indie music newspaper self-published by Ron Young in San Antonio from May 1978 to April 1982, with Kimsey serving as both a contributing writer and photographer. The publication chronicled the rise of punk and New Wave music in San Antonio and Austin, reporting on national touring acts like Blondie, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, the Ramones, the Clash and the Sex Pistols, as well as local and regional rock ’n’ roll, blues and heavy metal acts. Kimsey’s photographic work depicts well known artists such as Sting, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Tom Petty, Judas Priest, and 73 other artists, many of which appeared in It’s Only Rock ’N’ Roll.

Abstract
Archival material donated by San Antonio, Texas music photographer Clyde Kimsey. This collection consists of black and white and color photographs, 35mm color slides, contact sheets, 35mm color negatives and color photographs stored on disc. These photographs document the punk rock, new wave and rock and roll artists performing in the San Antonio/Austin Texas area and featured in the San Antonio indie music newspaper It’s Only Rock and Roll. Kimsey was a contributing photographer and writer for It’s Only Rock and Roll which was self-published by Ron Young from March 1978 to April 1982. The newspaper chronicled the San Antonio/Austin area music scene during this time focusing on punk, new wave and heavy metal bands as well as blues and jazz. Artists included in this collection are Roky Erickson and The Explosives, Cheap Trick, Judas Priest, The Ramones, The Police, Blondie, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Joe Jackson, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Blue Oyster Cult, The J. Geils Band, Dave Edmunds, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Barry among others. Where possible photographs appearing in It’s Only Rock and Roll have been identified and cross referenced with the date and page number of the edition in which they are published. All photographs are by Clyde Kimsey unless otherwise noted.
