Series Description
The images in this collection, including photographs, negatives, photocopies, and stats appeared in Texas Monthly alongside their longform articles and other editorial features. Photographers that are included in the collection include: Geoff Winningham, Keith Carter, David Smale, Patrick Berry, Will van Overbeek, Joe Baraban, Jim Cammack, Dennis Darling, and many others.
The collection is strong at showing the diverse inhabitants of Texas (see: "I Was a Bum" by Dick J. Reavis with photographs by Joe Baraban; "Working the Rigs" - Photographs by Nicolas Russell, and “Dear Parents of Dallas: Your Teenagers are Out Hot-Rodding, Drinking Beer, and Flirting on Forest Lane Every Friday Night!” by David Seeley with photographs by David Woo). As well as showcasing both the natural beauty and vibrant city life all across the state.
Another highlight are the portraits included in the collection. From sheriffs from around Texas “Howdy, Son. I’m the Law in this County” by Dick J. Reavis with photographs by Kent Barker to the Black inhabitants of Houston's Fifth Ward in "Only the Strong Survive” by Richard West with photographs by Pat Berry, to small-town homecoming queens ("Queen for a Day" - Photographs by Geoff Winningham).
The Editorial Photographs span from 1974-1998 and are arranged in the following sub-series: Article Known, Article Unknown, and Oversized.
The first sub-series consists of photographs where the accompanying article is known and for the majority of images, the photographer is credited. They are arranged chronologically by issue date and then by page number within the print magazine for multiple stories in one issue.
The next sub-series is for photographs where the accompanying article is unknown. These photographs are arranged by the photographer's name (when known). A large sub-subsubseries is the photographs that have an uknown photographer. These photographs are arranged by amount of material.
This last sub-series contains all the oversized photographs and negatives. They are arranged by date when the accompanying article is known. When the accomapying story is unknown they are arranged by photographer (if known) and then by amount of material.
As a note: titles in brackets are descriptive and were created by the archivist.
