Historical note

In 1964 friends and former colleagues J. Roy Moses, Jr., the Assistant Director of University Relations at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan and a former Southwest Texas State College journalism teacher, and Bruce Roche, the Director of College News Services, made a friendly agreement. In order to help publicize the Michigan Tech annual Winter Carnival Moses would have members of the Blue Key Fraternity pack up 500 hundred snowballs and ship them to his "less fortunate, snowless friends" back in San Marcos. The annual snowball fight was born and lasted from 1964 until 1979.

The SWT Press Club celebrated the tenth anniversary of the event in 1974 by providing the All-Campus Beauty Contest winner with a "dream" vacation to Houghton, Michigan during the Winter Carnival. On January 30, 1974, Austin native and junior drama major Debora Clearley headed north to the carnival. She was a judge for many of the events and took part in many activities. In October of 1979 the president of the Blue Key Fraternity announced Michigan Tech was discontinuing the snowballs to Texas program.
