The first issue, titled simply "Newsletter," asked employees to suggest a new name for the publication. Pat Murdock, the director of News and Iinformation Services, came up with the winning name and it became the "Chautauquan" in January 1990. The title, which tied into SWT and San Marcos history, was selected from over 70 unique entries.
