Collection consists of nine folders of letters written by Private Percival Whipple, who served in the Aviation Section Signal Corps in Texas during World War I. One finding aid and an article featured in Texas Heritage Magazine both written by six Texas State University graduate students in the Public History program. Arranged chronologically.

Biographical note

Percival Dodge Whipple, born April 19, 1895 in Hamilton Massachusetts, was a private stationed at Kelly Field and Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX during World War I. Before joining the Aviation Section Signal Corps, Pvt. Whipple attended Harvard and graduated in 1916. Pvt. Whipple was discharged from service on February 7, 1919, married Elinor Glover Robertson (spelled Eleanor in letters) on May 26, 1923. Percival Whipple later worked as a lineman for the New England Telephone & Telegram Company in Massachusetts.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The letters were found and purchased through the ebay website by Dr. Dan Utley. The full collection was processed and donated by Utley and his Local and Community History class of Spring 2017.
