Historical Note

Lyndon Johnson returned to campus to address a crowd of about 8,000 at the dedication of the "LBJ at San Marcos" display that was installed in the boarding house where he lived as a student. Johnson spoke about strides made in education since the Higher Education Act was passed in 1965, the benefits of the Head Start program, and read from his new book, The Vantage Point. He also talks about his Presidential Library opening the first group of his papers, which will be on the subject of education.

"The large audience consisted of invited guests, the total enrollment of the San Marcos public school system, some 4,700 students, plus large groups from Gary Job Corps Training Center and the San Marcos Academy, Southwest Texas students and faculty and others."
