Biography

Vernon McDonald enrolled at Southwest Texas State Teachers College in the fall of 1949 and graduated in 1952. While a student at the school, McDonald played the position of point guard for the men’s Bobcat basketball team. McDonald, who became better known as “Coach Mac,” began assistant coaching football and basketball at Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1953. He became the head basketball coach in 1961 and held that position until 1977. The 1974 Bobcats won the Lone Star Conference Championship under his direction. After retiring as basketball coach in 1977, he served on the faculty as an assistant professor of physical education until 1988. As of 2011, he was overseeing the Vernon McDonald Endowment Fund, which provides financial assistance for basketball student-athletes to attend summer school.

Abstract

Collection of materials relating to Vernon McDonald's time and tenure at Southwest Texas University (now Texas State University). An alumni, McDonald returned to work as a coach and became the head basketball coach from 1961-1977.
