Southwest Texas State University. Rodeo Association

 Organization

Biography

The Southwest Texas State University Rodeo Association was a nonprofit student organization active from the mid-1950s to the late 1990s. Begun in 1956 as the "Rodeo Club", whose members also referred to themselves as the "Wranglers", the self-funded organization existed to promote and support rodeo skills and activities. Faculty from the Department of Agriculture advised and supported the students in their efforts. A member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA), the Rodeo Association's primary activity was to organize and run an annual Southwest Texas State University (SWTSU) rodeo. Students raised funds by selling advertisements for local and area businesses to be printed in the event program. Rodeo team members also competed in regional and national competitions, and engaged in fundraising efforts to build a rodeo arena facility at the Freeman Ranch.
