Biography
The school community called High Prairie, Texas, was established with twenty-nine students on February 3, 1877. The public school became known as Blanco Star, as it was about three miles northeast of San Marcos on Uhland Road in southern Hays County and close to the banks of the Blanco River. The Blanco Star School opened in 1922 as a two room building that served as a primary and middle school. The school was supervised by the elected Hays County Superintendent; it employed two teachers, one of which acted as principal. Some of the older ex-students have memories indicating that the school was created in part to provide practice teaching opportunities for future teachers from the local teachers college, Southwest Texas State Teachers College. The school operated until 1945 when the students began attending San Marcos and Kyle schools.
Reunions for Blanco Star School began in 1982 when former teacher and principal, Audrey Jerles Herron, sought out alumni and former faculty. The final annual reunion of was held in the summer of 2016.
